Understanding Chronic Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common ailment, affecting individuals of all ages and activity levels. As one of the body's largest and most complex joints, the knee is crucial for mobility and bears significant weight during daily activities. This makes it susceptible to a variety of injuries and conditions that can cause pain and limit function.

Common causes of knee pain range from acute injuries to chronic conditions and may include:

  • Ligament sprains or tears: The knee has four major ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) that provide stability. Sudden twists, impacts, or awkward landings can strain or tear these ligaments, causing pain, swelling, and instability.

  • Meniscus tears: The menisci are C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as cushions within the knee joint. Twisting motions or degeneration over time can lead to meniscus tears, resulting in pain, clicking, or locking of the knee.

  • Osteoarthritis: This is a degenerative joint disease that causes the gradual breakdown of cartilage in the knee. It commonly affects older adults and can lead to chronic knee pain, stiffness, and swelling.

  • Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the knee, such as the patellar tendon (jumper's knee) or the iliotibial (IT) band, can cause pain and tenderness, often related to overuse or repetitive activities.

  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome: Also known as "runner's knee", this condition causes pain around the kneecap.

While some cases of acute knee pain may resolve with rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain relievers, persistent or severe pain warrants medical attention. If you experience chronic knee pain lasting for several weeks, or if your pain is accompanied by significant swelling, instability, or difficulty bearing weight, it's important to consult a knee pain specialist.

A specialist can accurately diagnose the cause of your pain, rule out more serious underlying issues, and develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your knee function and improve your quality of life.
